The Radio Pioneer Who Unleashed Rock 'n' Roll on the Airwaves and Ignited a Revolution!

The Hound’s around,no top 40,just hound sounds.
That was George”Hound Dog”Lorenze,on WKBW-AM on
the big 50,000 watt signal out of Buffalo,NY back
in the 50s.His theme song”Big Heavy,on States Records
by Cosy Eggleston, and his combo, and was the same theme Alan
“Moondog”Freed used on WINS-AM in NYC.The”Hound”always
played some great RnB,that other stations didn’t play or
even know existed.Seven Nights,by Dee Clark on Falcon Records;
My Only Love,by the Falcons,on Falcon;Chickin Hearted,by Roy Orbison,
on Sun Records;Moving & Groovin,by Duane Eddy,on Jamie Records.He really
played the cool sounds, the grass roots stuff that became prized collectors
items.I had quite a want list from listening to him,and it took me quite
a few years to track down some of the sounds he played, cuz the local record
stores didn’t know what I was talking about.I had a big tube stand up radio
that also had a shortwave band.I used to attach a copper wire out the back
of the set from the antenna conductor and stick it out the window and WKBW-
AM came in really good late at night.I used to be able to pick up WLAC-AM
out of Nashville,TN late at night,as well. They played some great blues too.
AM Radio was the golden days of real deal djs before top 40 came in and the
payola scandals, which destroyed the music and the djs,who were part of the
blues culture of driving the good stuff into the mainstream of America.

Yours In Memory,

Bill Nolan-WPKN-FM Bridgeport,Connecticut
host of”Antique Blues”since 1969,keeping the
blues alive.
