The Hound still lives … I grew up in St. Catharines, Ontario and, as a teenager, I listened to the Hound every night.
Now I live in Australia, and I was doing a series of lectures called The Roots of Rock and Roll. To give my Aussie audience a taste of 50’s radio, I recreated the opening of The Hound’s show, complete with The Big Heavy, the howl, call signal for WKBW and ‘coming to you from the Zanzibar Lounge, in downtown Buffalo, New York!
The Aussies loved it and I played many of the R and B songs I remember first hearing on his show.
