The Radio Pioneer Who Unleashed Rock 'n' Roll on the Airwaves and Ignited a Revolution!

I tripped across the houndog by accident, on FM radio to boot. It was in the early ’60s and his show was coming through WBLK in Buffalo. My dad had bought our first FM radio, about which I knew nothing. At that time the only music on the FM band was elevator and supermaker tunes. Always a radio addict, I decided to give it one try, about 7:00 o’clock one evening. Very slowly I moved the tuner. Had I failed and discovered that the FM band played only dull, longhair stuff, with the attendant boring, snoozing announcers, I would have pulled the plug and used the radio as a door stop.

Viola!! Eureka!!! Somewhere in the middle of the band I heard heaven, The Hound Dog George Lorenz. It opened with the customary hoowwwwwwlllll, followed immediately by ‘Shakin’ Sugar’ by the Lonnie Woods Trio. I was hooked.

There wasn’t a DJ accessible to my radio about whom I didn’t know something, in the U.S. and here in Canada. I liked many of the others but loved The Hound.

God Bless you, Sir. Make you rest in peace. Also, please put in a good word for me because, with any luck, someday I’ll be there, too, once again listening to the Hound Dog Show’.
“HooowwwwwwLLLLLLLLLLL!”
