The Radio Pioneer Who Unleashed Rock 'n' Roll on the Airwaves and Ignited a Revolution!

I grew up on the East Side of Buffalo and I will never, ever forget the Hound Dog! Buffalo was a great music town. Radio disk jockeys that I heard when I was young went on to become legends. I remember: Eddie O’Jay, Jerry “B” (Bledsoe), Dan Nevereth, Joey Reynolds, Joe Rico, Gary Byrd, the legendary Frankie (“Hollywood”) Crocker, etc. But, there is no question that George “Hound Dog” Lorenz was the daddy of them all.

Hound Dog used to end his show with the sound of his footsteps as he was walking down the hall and out of the radio studio.

The coolest thing was that you might see Hound Dog in the community at any time. I was too young to even think about going into the Zanzibar on William Street, but I remember it well. I also recall: Mandy’s, The Moonglo, Little Harlem, the Revillot, the BonTon, the Royal Arms, and, of course, the Pine Grill!!!

I also remember that Eddie O’Jay of WUFO used to sign off with the sound of his Corvette pealing off. Minutes later, you might see O’Jay (“everybody out of the pool!”) on the East Side in his red corvette.

Say what you may about Buffalo, but I have a lot of good musical memories from growing up there . . . .
